Want to fix the climate? First, we have to change everything

Grist

Interview with Gar Alperovitz
I came out of liberal politics — that politics is over. ... And it’s fundamentally over because the labor movement is over. ... But [unionized] labor went from 34 percent of the labor force to now 6 percent of the private sector — the whole power structure is disintegrated. ... People haven’t grasped how profound that change is.

I wrote a piece recently about the number of people who are [estimated] to die [because of future climate change impacts]. We’re talking to 300,000 to 500,000 a year worldwide.

GRACE artist concept.jpg
Dibujo: NASA. Licensed under Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons.

Earth Day: scientists say 75% of known fossil fuel reserves must stay in ground

The Guardian
22 de abril, 2015
The Earth League, which includes Nicholas Stern, the author of several influential reports on the economics of climate change; Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, a climate scientist and adviser to Angela Merkel; and the US economist Jeffrey Sachs, urged world leaders to follow up on their commitments to avoid dangerous global warming.

The Earth Statement

We can still avert dangerous climate change. However, we are currently on a warming trajectory that will leave our world irrevocably changed, far exceeding the 2°C mark. This gamble could propel us into completely uncharted waters, with unmanageable sea-level rise and a vastly different climate, including devastating heat waves, persistent droughts and unprecedented floods. The foundations of our societies, including food security, infrastructure, ecosystem integrity and human health, would be in jeopardy, impacting most immediately the poor and vulnerable.
